Senapati, May 12 : Coming out strongly against the alleged biased and one sided decision of the State Government to approach the Centre on the ILP issue, the United Naga Council (UNC) has also decided to endorse the ‘48 hrs total shutdown’ in all tribal territories starting May 16 midnight till May 18 midnight. It has also appealed to the tribals to extend support and co-operation to the proposed agitation while warning against any anti-tribal elements plotting to disturb the tribal movement.
Slamming the Manipur Government, UNC said that the recent decision that an all political party team will proceed to New Delhi to press for the implementation of ILP Bills passed in the Assembly on August 31 last year has further divided the tribals of Manipur and valley based people. Rather than maintaining a neutral stand to subside the present social and political turmoil of Manipur, the Government’s decision to side with the anti-tribal group has sent a negative message to the world, it said.
While appealing the public to support the proposed 48 hrs total shutdown in all tribal areas, the UNC warned that any violation of the 48 hrs democratic agitation will be dealt with strongly as it will be considered as an anti-tribal activity.
A statement issued by the UNC publicity wing noted that the communal State Government undermining the sentiments and aspirations of the tribals in Manipur has grossly decided to protect only the interest of the valley based majority. With the bodies of the nine tribal martyrs still unburied even after 250 plus days, the Manipur Government sided with ‘communal policies’ to oppress the tribals’ protest. It warned that the destructive agendas of the State Government will not serve any purpose but further divide the State and promote social and political unrest. The tribals of Manipur with their own proven historical identity, land, culture and history will unite to achieve its aspirations at all cost.
