JCILPS strike turns ugly as one dies in attack by protestors

JCILPS strike turns ugly as one dies in attack by protestors

Universal News Agency

Imphal, May 21: The 38-hour strike call given by the JCILPS that crippled normal life for the second consecutive day on Saturday ended with an ugly turn after a 43-year-old man who backed home after buying birthday cake for his daughter died in attack by pro-ILPS protestors.

Forty-three-year-old Okram Balendro of Pishum Oinam Leikai, Imphal succumbed to his injuries at RIMs hospital where he was rushed Friday night, around 10 pm with severe injuries on his head.

He met with an accident after hit by stones pelted by pro-ILPS protestors at Uripok along the Imphal-Kangchup road where he backed home after buying birthday cakes and gifts for his daughter. He was riding an Activa brand scooter.

The 38-hour strike call given by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) that severely hit normal life across the valley area of the state has ended this evening at 6 pm with sporadic violent incidents at some places.

The strike coupled with non-stop incessant rain forced people to stay home for the day. The state experienced heavy to moderate downpour the whole day on Saturday.

Braving the incessant rain of the day, pro-ILPS protestors took to the streets at various places and imposed ban on vehicular movement.

Even in the absent of the strike supporters, people with essential services had a hard time while negotiating the barricades erected by the strike supporters at various places

Like the previous day, pro-ILPS protestors confronted with police as they were prevented from marching on the streets as part of the “Sintha Leppa” strike. At some places in Imphal, police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse the strikers.

Some protestors sustained minor injuries which need no medical attention in police action.

At Singjamei along the Imphal-Moreh section of NH-102, police had a hard time to deal with large number of pro-ILPS protestors who marched towards Imphal by shouting various slogans demanding immediate implementation of ILPS, enactment of three ILPS related bills passed by the state Assembly.

Police had to erect barbwire barricades on the road and used tear gas shells to stop them from further proceeding.

The 38-hour “Sintha Leppa” strike call was given by the JCILPS as part of pressurizing both the state and the Centre for implementation of ILPS and to enact the three bills which were passed by the Manipur Assembly on August 31, 2015 to address ILPS issue.

Meanwhile, chief minister O Ibobi Singh today informed that a delegation of political parties to be led by him will soon visit the national capital to press the Centre for giving assent to the three bills passed by the state Assembly to address ILPS issue.

Addressing at the ‘Anti-Terrorism Day’ observance function held at the banquet hall of 1st Manipur Rifles, the chief minister said that the visit of the delegation was delayed as the date for meeting with the President, Prime Minister and other Union ministers could not be fixed.

Government was trying it best effort to get the appointment at the earliest. “As soon as the appointment fixes, the delegation with head for Delhi, he said, asserting that there was no question of playing delaying tactics by the government.
