IMPHAL, May 30: Manipur University authorities today decided to adopt c entral reservation norms in the matter of admission to various courses under the university.
Earlier, hundreds of women and students today stormed the Manipur University campus demanding immediate revocation of state reservation norms with regard to admissions in violation of UGC guidelines.
The decision was taken today in the meeting of Manipur University Academic Council.
Reports said, hundreds of women from different organizations and students today turned up at the MU gate raising slogans for reversion to central reservation norms which was in force till the academic session 2013-14.
The protestors brought down the university gate which was locked from inside, and stormed the campus.
A spokesperson of Meetei Students’ Association Manipur University (MSAMU) said, Manipur University reverted to state reservation norms from the academic session 2014-15 regardless of the fact that MU is a Central University and in violation of UGC guidelines.
The Central Educational Institutions (Reservations in Admissions) Amendment Act 2012 clearly stipulates that all Central Universities shall follow the central reservation norm of SC (15%), ST (7.5%) and OBC (27%).
It may be recalled here that the University Grants Commission (UGC) had recently sent a reminder to MU authorities on March 23 this year to strictly follow central reservation norms in the matter of teaching, non-teaching posts as in admissions to various courses and degrees.
He added, the decision to revert to state reservation norms was taken by MU authorities following protests from ST students of the university.
The state reservation norm is SC (2%), ST (31%) and OBC (17%).
MSAMU had served an ultimatum to the MU authorities that the members of the Academic Council will not be allowed to leave the campus till it takes a decision to follow central reservation norms in Manipur University.
