On account of over 900 Kukis killed by Nationalist Sociologist Council of Nagalim (Isak & Muivah) from 1992-1997, Kukis and their Mizo brethren represented by Pu Lal Thanhawla, Chief Minuster Mizoram observed 13 September Kuki Black Day in Aizawl.
In the course of 'Kuki Genocide' carried out by NSCN (IM) from 1992-1997, 13 September in 1993 bears especial significance because on that fateful day, a total of 104 innocent, unarmed Kuki civilians were slaughtered, 87 from Joupi village and 17 from Gelnel village in Tamenglong District in Manipur.
Post 1995, Kukis across the world observe 13 September Kuki Black Day in remembrance of their dearly departed.
